This Week in Guns 342 – What is The Buzz

This show offers commentary on the latest firearms industry news, information and buzz.  I’m your host Matthew Larosiere and I’m here with my co-host Shawn Herrin.

The brace kerfuffle

There’s some buzz now regarding a FOIA request ATF responded to on the pistol brace subject. People are reporting that ATF is claiming 23 SB tactical braces are actually stocks. That is not the case.

This related back to when, in 2018, ATF sent a notice to SB Tactical complaining about their marketing. SB marketed all of their braces as “ATF Compliant” and “reviewed,” when SB had only submitted two designs to the agency. The letter was just ATF bitching about SB’s marketing, not a reclassification of braces.

This did relate to a high-profile criminal prosecution in which a rogue field agent referred to a certain firearm with a certain brace as an SBS (this later resulted in the GCA SBS letters). The SBS charge was not the main part of that prosecution, but something “tacked on” to an otherwise high-profile criminal.

I am firmly of the belief that the GCA SBS classification we all saw several months back came to exist only to preserve efforts to pin charges in that specific case. Which is BS, but alas.

Pennsylvania Gov to Veto gun bill

Gov Tom Wolf of PA will veto coming legislation that would repeal laws surrounding the carry and sale of arms during states of emergency.

This relates back to all the crap we saw in the early COVID days.

Wauwatosa, WI Mayor: Keep Guns out of Gun Free Zones

You might have seen memes about this. The mayor of the town where there was a shooting last week was actually smoothbrained enough to say that, had the shooter followed the gun-free restrictions, nobody would have been hurt.

Virginia AG prevents gun show

Virginia AG Mark Herring was boasting and bragging about how he prevented the Nation’s gun show, one of the big names in VA gun shows, from operating at full steam.

The Nation challenged a Covid restriction that would cap attendance to 250 at one time, which would be crippling if you’ve ever been to one of these. The show organizers expected to draw about 25,000 guests over the weekend, and that’s no exaggeration.

He tweeted: “BREAKINGI have successfully BLOCKED a massive gun show from operating at full capacity this weekend in NOVA.

Putting hundreds or even thousands of Virginians at risk for the sole purpose of selling guns is just not worth it and I’m pleased that the Judge agreed with me.”

CA Undersheriff indicted in carry license bribery scandal

A top Santa Clara Sheriff’s office official was indicted as the fifth person to face criminal charges surrounding a pay-to-play scheme for concealed carry licenses in California which was set off after a bunch of individuals got their licensed only after making sizable donations to a committee to re-elect Sheriff Laurie Smith.

Florida carry permits in high demand

The Florida department of Ag is reporting all-time high carry permit applications in the gunshine state, with the state backed up for months. Applicants are presently having to wait about 60 days to get their permit, 3x the normal wait time.

The ammo shortage: when will it be over?

We’ll discuss what the reasons are behind the shortage, including covid restrictions causing a shutdown for foreign made primers.
